Job Description
This position will be responsible for the maintenance of land, equipment and infrastructure, procurement of agricultural products and related supplies, record keeping and required reporting as necessary and as instructed by the center Director or farm manager.
The successful candidate interacts with project leaders and the farm manager and works closely with the rest of the farm crew to perform daily tasks. During growing seasons, this position will support field crew, with expected daily activities in farm, greenhouse, and at times in the laboratory work to achieve the research and Extension mission of Virginia Tech and the Southern Piedmont AREC.
The employee will be required to occasionally work beyond the normal work schedule and on weekends, work outside in adverse weather conditions, and travel to perform necessary tasks at offsite locations.
Required Qualifications
• Experience with maintenance and repairs of farm and other machinery safely and effectively, including vehicles, tractors, planters, cultivators, combines, sprayers, harvesters, and/or building and facility repairs.
• Ability to operate farm machinery safely and effectively, including tractors, planters, cultivators, combines, sprayers, harvesters
• Knowledge of agricultural techniques and procedures, sufficient to project sound judgment into research settings when needed
• Demonstrated appreciation of safety, precision, thoroughness, and timeliness
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to fit in a diverse and fast-paced working environment
• Must have a valid US driver’s license and good driving record
• Must be able to read, write, and follow instructions
• Must hold or obtain Virginia Commercial Pesticide Applicator's License Category 10 within a year of hiring date.
• Must be willing to participate in and serve on center committees (e.g., hiring committees, Facility and Equipment Committee, or Employee Recognition and Appreciation Committee)
Preferred Qualifications
• Associates or BS degree in automotive, electro-mechanical technology, agricultural technology, or related area/equivalent training
• Commercial driver’s license with a Class A endorsement.
