Qualities that I utilize the most in my role are flexibility, the willingness to lend a hand, project management, and people skills. I regularly am working with individuals from a number of different departments in a given day. So, it is important to know what each stakeholder needs. Also, I work with the public on a regular basis so being a good representative of the university is imperative.

Beyond your specific expertise in Family and Consumer Sciences, Agriculture and Natural Resources, or Youth Development, extension agents also need people skills and community leadership abilities. You need to be able to explain often complex research in simple, practical terms. Strong public speaking skills are a huge asset to this position. Strong technology skills are also needed.
